WEIGHT LOSS

Holistic weight management requires a multi-facted approach: A Nutritional Therapist’s perspective on the journey to balanced nutrition and weight

Beyond calories: the complexity of weight management

The traditional approach to weight management has centred around calorie counting, with the belief that a calorie deficit leads to weight loss. However, this perspective is oversimplified and fails to account for the complexities of our bodies. Research has shown that the relationship between calorie intake and weight loss is not always linear; calorie restriction can also lower our basal metabolic rate (BMR) by reducing body temperature and heart rate. As a nutritional therapist, I want to emphasise that holistic weight management is far more nuanced, requiring a multi-faceted approach rather than focusing solely on calorie intake (see below).

Why fad diets fail: the limitations of quick fixes

Drastic, do-it-yourself or fad diets may deliver short-term rapid weight loss but are hard to sustain and often lead to nutrient deficiencies, metabolic slowdown, and the loss of lean muscle mass. Additionally, these one-size-fits-all methods rarely consider individual variations in metabolism, hormonal balance, gut health, or stress levels. Their restrictive nature makes them unsustainable, resulting in weight regain. As a nutritional therapist, I empower people towards a realistic, science-backed and long-lasting approach to holistic weight loss that takes into account their unique physiological and lifestyle needs. A personalised nutritional therapy coaching session can provide the tools and guidance needed to create sustainable habits.

The impact of blood sugar imbalances on weigh management

Fluctuating blood sugar levels can lead to increased hunger, food cravings, and energy crashes, making it difficult to maintain a balanced diet and stable weight. Insulin resistance, where the body becomes less responsive to insulin, can disrupt the body’s ability to utilise glucose and can lead to fat storage, particularly around the abdomen, and further metabolic complications. Navigating through blood sugar imbalances requires a personalised nutrition and lifestyle coaching plan that is aimed at restoring balance, while educating people on how to nourish their bodies with real, nutrient-dense meals that help control appetite, reduce cravings, and keep them fuller for longer, all while incorporating intuitive eating principles to foster a healthier relationship with food.

The impact of hormonal imbalances on weight loss

The thyroid gland and sex hormones significantly influence metabolism and weight. Hormonal imbalances such as hypothyroidism, hormonal shifts due to menopause (reduced oestrogen), andropause (reduced testosterone), or conditions like PCOS (oestrogen dominance) can disrupt metabolic processes, appetite, and fat distribution. A personalised nutrition plan that addresses these hormonal patterns, along with targeted testing (such as blood tests, dried urine tests, or genetic testing), is often necessary to effectively manage imbalances and support weight regulation.

The role of gut health in weight management and weight loss

The gut microbiome, a diverse community of microorganisms in the digestive tract, plays a crucial role in weight regulation and overall health. An imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to inflammation, weight fluctuations, increased fat storage, and insulin resistance. Additionally, an unhealthy gut can disrupt hunger and satiety signals, making it harder for people to regulate food intake. Supporting gut health with targeted prebiotics, probiotics, and fibre-rich foods helps restore balance, improves nutrient absorption, and fosters an environment conducive to effective weight management.

The importance of mental health and quality sleep for successful weight loss

Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, leading to increased appetite, cravings, and abdominal fat accumulation. Poor sleep exacerbates this by disrupting hunger hormones like ghrelin, increasing appetite and reducing satiety. Managing stress and supporting mental health through techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, walk in nature, along with ensuring quality sleep, is key for holistic weight management as people often turn to food as a coping mechanism for stress. Research suggests that getting fewer than 4 hours of quality sleep per night can significantly impact hunger hormones and increase cravings.

The role of exercise in weight loss

The type, intensity, and consistency of exercise play a vital role in maintaining muscle mass, boosting metabolism, and supporting overall energy expenditure. A balanced approach that includes strength training and cardiovascular exercise and aligns with your unique physiology can optimise your weight loss efforts. For people looking to make exercise a sustainable habit, finding activities they enjoy and that fit their lifestyle is key to long-term success. Studies show that consistency over 12 weeks is crucial for building strength, and metabolic improvements that support weight loss.

The role of  weight loss drugs

The use of weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro should be carefully considered within a broader, holistic weight management strategy. These medications work by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone to regulate appetite and blood sugar levels, and can lead to reduced food intake and subsequent weight loss. Mounjaro, in particular, works through a dual mechanism, mimicking both GLP-1 and GIP (gastric inhibitory peptide) hormones, which enhances its effects on blood sugar control and appetite regulation. However, these medications are not a one-size-fits-all solution.

The potential for nutrient deficiencies and side effects, including nausea, vomiting, gall bladder or kidney issues, an elevated risk of pancreatitis, and thyroid tumours, necessitates careful supervision by a healthcare professional.

At Wellness with Ruchi, we understand that weight loss drugs may be warranted in cases of chronic weight-related conditions, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, or cardiovascular disease, where the potential health risks of these conditions outweigh the side effects of the medications. We support clients who are using or transitioning off weight loss drugs, providing them with personalised nutrition plans, exercise regimens, and behaviour strategies to help manage side effects, meet their daily nutrient requirements, preserve their muscle mass, and build lasting habits to achieve sustainable, holistic weight loss while reducing long-term reliance on these drugs.

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is not simply about calorie counting or following a trend. It requires a personalised, realistic approach that considers the unique factors influencing your metabolism and overall health. By addressing blood sugar imbalances, hormonal disruptions, gut health, stress, sleep, and exercise, we help you create a holistic approach to sustainable weight loss and weight management that supports long-term health and wellbeing – all while keeping the joy of eating intact.

  • What is nutritional therapy?
Nutritional therapy is a complementary medicine that uses nutrition and lifestyle changes to promote an individual's health and well-being. Nutritional therapy is underpinned on the principles of functional medicine (see below). Nutritional Therapists assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and the underlying root causes of presenting symptoms instead of merely treating the symptoms. They use a variety of tools (which may include functional tests) to develop personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes to address the symptoms. Nutritional therapists may work independently or collaborate with conventional medicine and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
  • Why is it important to see a registered Nutritional Therapist?
The title "nutritional therapist" is not protected by law in the UK, so anyone can call themselves a nutritional therapist, regardless of their qualifications. However, only nutritional therapists who have completed accredited training can register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) or the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT). These professional bodies set high standards of practice for their members, so you can be confident that registered nutritional therapists have the necessary training and competence. Registered practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes.
  • What is the difference between dietitians, nutritionists and nutritional therapists?
Dietitians are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems for individuals and communities. They typically work in the NHS, but may also work in other settings such as education, research, media and sport. The title ‘dietician’ is protected by law in the UK and statutorily regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Nutritionists are food and nutrition experts who help communities improve their health and well-being by providing evidence-based information. Unlike nutritional therapists, they are not qualified to work with clients on a one-on-one basis in a clinical setting. The title "nutritionist" is not regulated by law in the UK, but nutritionists who meet certain standards can join professional bodies such as the Association for Nutrition (AfN) and apply to the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN) to become Registered Nutritionists (RNutrs). Nutritional therapists (NTs) are food and nutrition experts who can work with both groups and individuals in a clinical setting. Unlike dietitians, they do not diagnose or treat diseases. Instead, they use a functional medicine approach to assess the root causes of an individual’s symptoms, health concerns or diseases. NTs never recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice, but often work alongside conventional medicine practitioners to support people with a wide range of health conditions. The title "nutritional therapist" is not regulated by law in the UK, but practitioners who have completed accredited training can register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) or the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT).
  • What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is a comprehensive, holistic and patient-centred approach to healthcare that focuses on promoting overall health and well-being, rather than simply treating diseases. Practitioners of functional medicine evaluate clinical imbalances within biological systems to identify the root causes of disease and dysfunction. They then work with their patients to develop personalised action plans which address underlying issues and promote healing. Nutrition and lifestyle changes are emphasised in functional medicine. Functional medicine practitioners work alongside conventional medicine.
  • What is functional testing?
Functional tests are diagnostic tests which help assess the body's nutritional status and biochemical imbalances. In simple terms, they allow us to go beyond traditional diagnostics used in conventual medicine and uncover the root causes and the 'why' of your health concerns/diagnoses rather than just 'treating the symptoms' approach. As a registered Nutritional Therapist, I have access to many accredited laboratories offering functional tests which is not available on the NHS. These include microbiome analysis to assess gut, vaginal and oral microbiome, comprehensive stool tests to assess gastro-intestinal health, food intolerances test, blood, urine and saliva tests for hormonal imbalances, organic acids test to assess metabolism, nutrigenomics (genetic testing) to understand how genetic variations influence nutrient metabolism and dietary responses and many more.
